2021 Recap: It was the first year of the Gus Malzahn chapter. They finished the season with nine wins altogether and six wins in their final seven games. Back to Gus for a quick second. I thought last year was one of the best coaching jobs he’s done in his career. He loses Dillion Gabriel to injury and still gets productive play from Mikey Keene. Mikey was a true freshman and took advantage of his opportunity. He threw 17 touchdown passes. They won an impressive bowl over the Florida Gators in the Gasparilla Bowl back in January. The defense was one of the best in the nation at defending the pass.
Key Departures: Quarterback Dillion Gabriel, Receiver Brandon Johnson, Offensive Lineman Cole Schneider, Offensive Lineman Marcus Tatum, Defensive End Big Kat Bryant, Linebacker Tatum Bethune & Linebacker Bryson Armstrong.
2022 Prediction: The foundation was set in 2021. Now, it’s time to capitalize upon it. Gus has a majority of his group returning from 2021. Dillion Gabriel has transferred to Oklahoma, so the quarterback spot will come down to Mikey Keene and John Rhys Plumlee. If you know anything about a Malzahn offense, he loves to use his quarterback’s mobility to his advantage. Kobe Hudson, a former Auburn Tiger will transfer and play for his former coach back at Auburn. 16 starters from last season return (Eight on offense and eight on defense). In five years, they’ve won a total of 50 games.
