“Ain’t That A Metch”

The last few years, Alabama Football has made a case to be “Wide Receiver U”. Some big names have worn the crimson and white. Julio Jones played there. In the last few seasons, they’ve also had Jerry Jeudy, a Heisman winner in DeVonta Smith who put together the best season I’ve seen from a wide receiver in college football and this year, Jaylen Waddle and this year, Jameson Williams is another one to keep your eye one. Also, they have another playmaker named John Metchie III who was a third option last season for the Crimson Tide. Unfortunately, his season is done after tearing his ACL on Saturday in the SEC title game against the Georgia Bulldogs.

John has emerged as one of the best playmakers not just in the SEC, but in the entire country. What makes him stand out is the route running and how he frees himself to get open. I’m reminded so much of Stefon Diggs when I watch him. John is a naturally gifted receiver with the speed that can get down the football field in a hurry. Once he’s free, he’s not getting caught. The speed he possesses gives him the ability to create that separation at all three levels of the field. While John is known to be a downfield threat, he’s added on to his game. The great wide receivers are able to do a variety of things such as block and go over the middle to make those contested catches in traffic. He can also run those slant routes with such consistency. One thing I’ve noticed about him is his versatility. John can line up in the back field as well. With the speed he has, he gives Saban the ability to use him on fake jet sweeps.

I wouldn’t necessarily say it’s a big loss for them. They were without Jaylen Waddle last year and everything panned out just fine for them. This just means others will need to step it up as Saban would preach. John had a breakout year this season for the Crimson Tide. Of course, he became Bryce Young’s top target throughout the season. Look for offensive coordinator Bill O’Brien to use Ja’Corey Brooks a bit more in an outside role. I also expect slot receiver Slade Bolden and the tight ends to be used more. Here’s to a speedy recovery for this star receiver.
