2023 Review: Last year was their inaugural season in the AAC and it fared pretty well for them. It was a 9-4 year under Jeff Traylor with an impressive 7-1 conference record which resulted in a third place finish and a Bowl victory over Marshall to close out the year. Quarterback Frank Harris finished his UTSA career as the leader in passing yards, touchdowns, rushing touchdowns and rushing yards. However, Owen McCown and Eddie Lee Marburger each saw some playing time due to injuries. This was a Roadrunners offense that averaged 32 points per game in 2023. The defense could be better as they allowed 24 points per contest.
Key Departures: WR Joshua Cephus, S Rashad Wisdom, LB Trey Moore, DT Brandon Matterson, DB Kam Alexander.
2024 Prediction: I like the Roadrunners to build off their season from last year and win a share of the AAC to face Memphis for the conference championship. Owen McCown, the son of veteran NFL Quarterback, Josh McCown will more than likely be the starting Quarterback in the fall. I’ll be watching their Offensive Line and we all know football games are won in the trenches. Consistency up front is what will be key to a winning season. UTSA will return three starters up front from last season. On the other side of the ball, replacing Trey Moore will take a group effort as he was everything to this defense. I’ll also be watching the secondary. Will it be a rebuild or reload? Only time will tell.
