1. San Francisco 49ers– I’m still questioning all they did over the weekend. They didn’t have a first-round pick dating back to 2021 when they traded up to three with the Miami Dolphins and the second-round pick belonged to the Carolina Panthers as part of last year’s traded that helped San Fran land Christian McCaffrey. The 49ers had three third-round picks on day two in the third round. One of those picks was used on kicker Jake Moody, a kicker from Michigan. Did the value match the pick? The only value pick I saw was Penn State Safety, Ji’ayir Brown. The final day of the draft was mostly quiet for the NFC West team that’s played in the last two NFC Championship games. John Lynch has built a contender since become the General Manager. This draft was the cost of landing Lance. How much longer will Trey Lance linger?
2. Washington Commanders– The Dan Snyder era is officially over (finally), but this team still has question marks on the field. This is the worst team in the NFC East, just to be honest. The Commanders were able to beef up the secondary with Mississippi State’s Emmanuel Forbes and Illinois Safety, Jartavius Martin. K.J. Martin was the Commanders best pick in the third-round and in the sixth-round, they added Chris Rodriguez Jr, a Running Back from Kentucky. If I were the Commanders, I would’ve added one of the two Tight Ends (Dalton Kincaid and Michael Mayer) to provide Sam Howell with some weapons. I just don’t think they did enough to move the needle in their division. This won’t push them to a winning record even under new ownership.
3. New York Jets– They had plenty of opportunities to swing something big in the draft. In the first-round, the Jets drafted Will McDonald from Iowa State. I understand Robert Saleh is a defensive minded guy, but you addressed the defense last season. This was the perfect opportunity to add a receiver such as Jaxson Smith-Njigba to a group that includes Allen Lazard, Mecole Hardman, Garrett Wilson and Corey Davis. This was one of the picks that you immediately label as a reach. I did like that the Jets did upgrade the Offensive Line with Wisconsin’s Joe Tippman and Pittsburgh’s Carter Warren. We will see how much Aaron Rodgers elevates a younger roster in his first season with the Jets.
