The 2015 NFL Draft introduced us to some wide receivers who were expected to make noise around the league today. Amari Cooper was the first receiver selected by the Raiders that year. Tyler Lockett was another one who entered the league that year and look what he became for Russell Wilson in Seattle for a few years. In the fifth round of that draft, the Minnesota Vikings decided to take a chance on a wide receiver from Maryland named Stefon Diggs. After spending the first five seasons of his career in Minnesota, the Vikings decided to trade him to the Buffalo Bills. After two successful years in Orchard Park, the team has decided to reward the star wideout. Stefon has signed a four-year contract extension worth $104 million and $70 million guaranteed.
Stefon is a top-three receiver in the league today. The one thing about him that flies under the radar is the energy guy he is. In his first year with Buffalo, I’d always see him roaming up and down the sidelines and would be that sparkplug for his team. Every group has that energy guy and if you ask any of his teammates, they fed off the energy he provided. On the field and when it comes to route running, he’s one of the best around today. Next to Davante Adams, Stefon is one of the very best when it comes to separating himself at the line of scrimmage. It’s almost as if it’s artwork on the field watching him because he can lure defensive backs into thinking he’s going one way, then plants the foot down and goes the other way. Stefon is a true number one receiver and I say this because when you need that one guy to make that catch down the field for you, he always delivers. He stretches the field vertically, he can go over the middle and make the contested catches in traffic. With the ball in his hands, he’s so electric. Stefon is what I refer to as a “true professional receiver” meaning there’s nothing he can’t do on the field. It’s truly effortless for him.
What impressed me the most with him was how he went to a new team with a new quarterback and learned a new offensive system so quickly. The chemistry he has with Josh Allen has amazed me as they’ve become one of the best quarterback/receiver tandems in the league today. This new deal keeps Stefon in Orchard Park for the foreseeable future.
