Jimbo Fisher was the offensive coordinator, quarterbacks coach and the next head coach in waiting to succeed the late Bobby Bowden. In his first season with the Seminoles, Jimbo led the team to their first ten-win season since 2003. Two years later in 2012, things took another step as Florida State won their first conference title in seven years and made a major bowl game also for the first time in seven years. The following year, he won a national championship as Florida State beat the Auburn Tigers. In eight seasons in Tallahassee, he won 83 games. After the 2017 season, he was hired by the Texas A&M Aggies to be their next head coach. Now, he’s been given a contract extension to remain in College Station.
He’s one of the five best coaches in the country. Prior to getting hired as a head coach, he called plays as an offensive coordinator. While his background is an offensive one, coach believes that championship teams have balance in each phase of the football game first and foremost. Jimbo has also said that he believes in establishing a defensive philosophy first then merging on an offensive system that best fits the football team. He’s a very hands-on coach that teaches you the ins and outs of the game. Jimbo teaches his players to work with situational football as much as possible. He’s stated the more he can get them into those types of situations, the more comfortable his players will be when those times present itself. I view that as a “stay ready so you won’t have to get ready” type of thing. When it comes to halftime adjustments, he’s been known as one of the best at doing so. His players love playing for him. Since coming to College Station, he’s implemented a more balanced, yet NFL-like offensive approach compared to the air raid Kevin Sumlin had while he was the coach at Texas A&M. His offenses consist of fullbacks and tight ends and lots of downhill running.
2020 was the best year under Jimbo Fisher for the Aggies. He led them to a 9-1 record and had them on the brink of making the playoffs. The Aggies were also ranked at number four which was their highest ranking since 1939. Each year he’s been there, he’s also led them to a bowl game and has been victorious. It’s good to know he’ll be staying in College Station for the foreseeable future.
