I can never figure out the Michigan Wolverines. Every year, they have extremely high expectations but can never live up to them. Jim Harbaugh was hired to be the head coach in 2015 and since then, the same results take place. They begin the year ranked, lose a game they have no business dropping and end the season on the losing side to the Ohio State Buckeyes, a team he’s never beat as the Michigan head coach. This year, they’ve begun the season 1-3. After their big opening night win in Minnesota, they’ve struggled significantly. What’s going on in Ann Arbor?
First, their offense has no type of identity. Either you want to run the football or throw it. Or, you have a balanced identity and they have neither. Joe Milton was able to succeed in that first game of the year because one it was his first start and two, when a player is making his first start at a key position, there’s never any tape on them. Next, their offensive line has been terrible in their last three games. They can’t protect, Milton is taking unnecessary hits and they get physically violated off the line of scrimmage every single play. It also doesn’t help when Milton isn’t taking care of the football.
Their defense isn’t the same. I felt strange saying this because every year, they always have one of the best defensive units in the country under Don Brown. It doesn’t matter who left or which recruits come in, Don always finds ways to work with what he has. Usually, they’re a physical bunch that dominates their opponents. Now, they’re on the receiving end of the physicality. It also doesn’t help when you lose your best defensive player in Aidan Hutchinson. Something must give.
