When defensive linemen are bought up, some of the normal names are discussed. When he’s healthy, J.J. Watt is one, Chandler Jones of the Arizona Cardinals is another. How about Joey Bosa for the Chargers? I think the same could be said with Nick Bosa in San Francisco. You can’t even begin to bring this up without mentioning Aaron Donald who’s the best at the position as we speak. Calais Campbell is a guy who may go under the radar but handles his business on the field. The first domino of the free agency frenzy fell today. The Baltimore Ravens have acquired the big guy from the Jacksonville Jaguars.
He’s the tallest defensive end in the NFL today standing at 6’8. It seems as if he’s been better as he’s getting older. The myth with players getting older is when they begin to get up there in age, they slow down. That hasn’t been the case with Calais. He plays how he looks. Which is big. Calais can line up all over the line of scrimmage and finds a way to get into the opposing backfield. I see a fast and athletic guy that if you overset him, he can adjust and go inside. He makes life easier for the linebackers because of the attention he commands upfront.
This is a really good move for a Ravens defense. I see Calais being a leader on this defense. He and Matthew Judon could become one of the best pass-rushing tandems in the NFL. Campbell on one side, Judon on the other along with Brandon Williams in the middle clogging things up could be scary for any opponent on the Ravens schedule in 2020.
