The Los Angeles Rams were one of the best stories of the 2017 season and I’ve mentioned it many times throughout the year with them winning the NFC West for the first time since the 2003 season and how they were a team in 2016 with one of the worst offenses in the league and the following year, they were one of the best behind the guidance of 31-year-old Sean McVay, the youngest head coach in NFL history. Although the Rams didn’t win a playoff game this year, the future is very bright for them. We talked about their offense, what about their defense? Under Wade Phillips, they were one of the best in the league and they also have the reigning defensive MVP in Aaron Donald. Today, the Rams made a move to acquire cornerback Marcus Peters from the Kansas City Chiefs, a move that I think will help bolster their secondary this upcoming season.
Marcus Peters has become one of the four best cornerbacks in the National Football League today in such a short period of time. He just finished his third season in the league and over that span, he’s recorded 19 interceptions. The first thing you immediately see in his game is the nose he has for the football and he’s always going for the ball whether he’s trying to make the interception, tip it away or knock the ball down and when the ball is thrown, it always seems to find a way to land in his lap. He’s a true turnover machine and he forces them in many ways. One play that stands out to me is from the 2016 season when the Kansas City Chiefs were facing the Carolina Panthers. It was the fourth quarter and the game was on the line. Cam Newton threw the ball to Kelvin Benjamin and once Kelvin had the ball in his hands, Marcus just stripped the ball and yanked it away and that’s what ended up sealing the deal for the Chiefs to win the game. That’s what makes him great is the ability to create a turnover when it’s needed.
I was shocked to hear about this happening. This is the second move the Chiefs have made this off-season. They made a deal to send Alex Smith to the Washington Redskins and begin the Pat Mahomes era in Kansas City and now, they dealt Peters. This is a great move for the Rams to improve their secondary. They now have a guy that can play receivers on an island. This should be fun to watch during the 2018 season.
